Understanding the issues and benefits of social software (JISC publication)

STUDIES OF STUDENTS AND IT

Since 2004, the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research (ECAR) has conducted longitudinal studies of students and information technology. The latest report, "The ECAR Study of Undergraduate Students and Information Technology, 2007," presents data from a spring 2007 survey and interviews with nearly 28,000 freshman, senior, and community college students at 103 higher education institutions. Some of the findings from this year's study include:

-- "Today's students spend a lot of time online. Respondents report spending an average of 18 hours per week actively doing online activities for work, school, or recreation, and 6.6 percent (more often
male) spend more than 40 hours per week."

-- Students surveyed "overwhelmingly (85.1 percent) favor e-mail for official college and university communications. . . . A resounding 82.5 percent say they prefer a university account" rather than a commercial account for these communications.

-- "While most respondents are enthusiastic IT users and use it to support many aspects of their academic lives, most prefer only a 'moderate' amount of IT in their courses (59.3 percent)."

A Shared Workspace is a Web area where members of a zigime people can collaborate on projects and documents.

For sharing purposes, Zigime Workspace supports document-level and workspace-level sharing with zigime teams of people, they are two ways for sharing the document in zigime workspace one is editors and another one is viewers. Editors can edit, delete and upload the owner of the shared document but viewers can only view the shared document.

In zigime workspace user can share his/her document to more no of his/her friends for example if one zigime user have 5000 friends they can share their own document to 5000 friends at that time and there is one option for activity in zigime workspace it shows the entire details about zigime workspace

There are two main types of Shared Workspaces: Meeting Workspaces and Document Workspaces. A Meeting Workspace is a Web location where zigime people can centrally store, view, and use all the resources associated with a meeting, such as attendees, documents, lists, and agendas.

In contrast, a Document Workspace is a Web location where zigime members can collaborate on documents created in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Workspace doesn't offer Web-based applications; Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that allows you to save new files to the Workspace site, add files already saved on your hard drive to the site, or open and edit documents previously stored online. The site supports both Internet Explorer and Firefox, but the Firefox version lacks a useful ActiveX-enabled button that opens a stored document in the appropriate Office app with one click.

ZigiMe Workspace allows you to store a maximum of 10mb.

The myth of the "net-generation" 'Google Generation' is a myth, says new research

New report reveals the information needs of the researchers and learners of
the future

16th January, 2008. A new report, commissioned by JISC and the British
Library, counters the common assumption that the 'Google Generation' - young
people born or brought up in the Internet age - is the most adept at using
the web. The report by the CIBER research team at University College London
claims that, although young people demonstrate an ease and familiarity with
computers, they rely on the most basic search tools and do not possess the
critical and analytical skills to asses the information that they find on
the web.

The report 'Information Behaviour of the Researcher of the Future' also
shows that research-behaviour traits that are commonly associated with
younger users - impatience in search and navigation, and zero tolerance for
any delay in satisfying their information needs - are now the norm for all
age-groups, from younger pupils and undergraduates through to professors.

The study calls for libraries to respond urgently to the changing needs of
researchers and other users and to understand the new means of searching and
navigating information. Learning what researchers want and need is crucial
if libraries are not to become obsolete, the report warns.

The findings also send a stark message to government - that young people are
dangerously lacking information skills. Well-funded information literacy
programmes are needed, it continues, if the UK is to remain as a leading
knowledge economy with a strongly-skilled next generation of researchers.

Dame Lynne Brindley DBE, Chief Executive of the British Library, said of the
report findings: "Libraries have to accept that the future is now. At the
British Library we have adopted the 'Wiki' view and the 'Beta' mindset. We
have seized many of the opportunities new technology offers to inspire our
users to learn, discover and innovate. However, we must do more and welcome
the report findings, particularly the need to equip users of all age-groups
with wider information and digital literacy skills."

Dr Malcolm Read, Executive Secretary of JISC, welcomed the publication of
the report, saying: "These findings add to our growing understanding of
subjects that should concern all who work in further and higher education -
the changing needs of our students and researchers and how libraries can
meet their needs. We hope that this report will encourage debate around
these important questions. We hope it will also serve to remind us all that
students and researchers will continue to need the appropriate skills and
training to help navigate an increasingly diverse and complex information
landscape."
